Right To Life

With the caption may be you are thinking that today I am going to discuss about "Article 21" (Right to Life). However, neither I want to write a political thesis nor I am interested in opening its different parameters.

I just want you to pay heed towards women belonging to that section of the society whose rights are hardly taken care of as talking about them is considered indecent by the society.

So, let me introduce them. They are so called sex workers. I am using the phrase so called because this phrase is chosen by us referring to their profession. But I very well remember what the one of my close friend told me.....

Koi bhi aisa kaam majboori kyy bina nhi krega

and I agreed because there is no need to explain what the term izzat means to a woman.

My aggression raised when I read the SC judgement of July 2011 where it had been said "conditions conducive for sex workers who wish to continue as sex workers to live with dignity in accordance with the provisions of Article 21 of the constitution of India".

The dilemma here is if being a common citizen of India I can understand that a women never ever choose this profession without any compulsion or force (like financial or personal reasons). Why the dignified court doesn't understand this.

Secondly, they are contradicting their own statement by using the word 'dignity' in it. Will dignity will be given to them by us if they remain in this profession. Really so?

They too have right to life, right to live like a normal human being where being a women is worth their dignity. Being the citizens of India it's our fundamental duty to provide them space in a society, open other alternatives for them and give them chance to explore the world in a way they never did before.

The government should try to take certain steps:-

• Voluntary workshops where they should train them to acquire different skills so that alternative jobs can be provided to them to earn their livelihood.

• Should make them aware of sexually transmitted diseases like AIDS, its consequences and after effects on their progenies.

• Should join hands with NGO's, volunteers and those who fall in this vicious cycle before to teach and train others.

I am not here to justify their profession and don't even know whether where they are should be right for them or not. But being a women, i can simply understand the depth of the problem of the victims and the conditions from which they suffer.

Evenly because they are themselves in this profession, their children are deprived of the basic rights. They are not welcome by the reputed school. Are they responsible for what their mother is or we are forcing them to accept you have no right to live like others.

They too have the right to live freely, move freely, breathe freely which we are not giving them. Can't we all join hands together and pledge not to allow any other victim to become prey in the lusty hands? Can't we force govt. to make stringent actions against those who forced them to be a part of such a life? Can't we free them from this vicious cycle? Can't we give their children a decent life to live upon?

The clock is ticking on. ⌚
